Routeburn NZ

Description

Description

Distance – 32km

Note – the Greenstone Caples Track links to the Routeburn Track at The Divide

Where do I start  – The Routeburn travels from the Routeburn Shelter close by Glenorchy near Queenstown

Where do I finish – The track finishes at The Divide 85km from Te Anau.

This walk can be done in either direction and your transport can be easily booked when you book the huts or campsites.

It is a 325km or 5 hour bus ride between the start and end of this track. If you have the energy it is a great idea to walk part of the Greenstone Caples Track which can link you back to Glenorchy.

During the Great Walks season the huts on the Routeburn have bunks, mattresses, heating, toilets, gas cooktops, solar-powered lighting and cold running water, and a DOC ranger is in residence. The huts do not provide food, cooking utensils, showers or bedding. You can also camp along the  route but remember to book.

The Routeburn is a fantastically scenic hike with alpine and lake views, alpine gardens full of delicate alpine plants, tussock meadows and spectacular vistas over the mountain ranges and valleys. There are many waterfalls including the impressive Earland Falls (174 metres),  Routeburn Falls cascade and the beautiful Bridal Veil Waterfall. You can connect the Routeburn to the Greenstone Caples Track and enjoy 95km of wonderful alpine hiking.
